A country that puts equality before freedom ends up with neither. Are there countries that have put equality before freedom? What was the result?

This sounds like the definition of communism. As of yet, no country has successfully implemented this system enduringly. The most infamous example is the Soviet Union. Forced equality produces a malaise over society where the individual is stifled by a lack of freedom to affect change in their own life. A society of individuals resigned to their fate will inevitably stagnate and eventually fail.
