Why has military history atrophied as a field of study?

Has it really atrophied? As a non-historian, looking around it feels like the study of military history is still active. I've noticed less "military historians" as occupations by authors and academics but military war colleges and universities are still thriving, civilian colleges have many active ROTCs that require mil history studies, ORSA's exist, and the book shelves are still filled with books about war.
